The aim of today is to make a doodle video... but do we really know that it is? Well, a doodle video is a very good way to learn a language almost without realizing it. Your students will think of getting a good video at the end of the lesson and on the way they will have learnt a lot of terms and expressions and the most important thing, they will have enjoyed throughout the entire process.
Below, you can watch my own doodle... it is just a sample that you can do in English class... how to make it is very, very easy! Pay close attention and involve your students...
Step 1. Choose a good song. I mean a fast song would not work... why? Your slides would go very, very fast and your students would pay attention when the video had finished. Furthermore, and depending on the level of the students, the song should be repetitive for reasons of learning. By the way, do you know if your students like the song? Find out! As you can see, it is not a simple task, but take it easy, there are many songs to choose.
Step 2. Let your students listen to the song and explain to them what a doodle video is and what you want to do. You have two options: organize a karaoke or give them the song sheet.
Step 3. Now, divide the class into pairs or groups. Depending on their age (Primary or Secondary School) and the level of knowledge, they will just draw according to the lyric or draw, take pictures and make the video using ICT. You just need to monitor the learning process...
Take note:
If you like, you can make your own video without their help and with just pictures or drawings and give them the song sheet as a “fill in the blanks” exercise.
The following doodle video has been made from pictures retrieved from the Internet and adapted or designed for me. It could be put into practice in the last stage of the Primary School and in the first stage of the Secondary School. To make it, I have used Windows Movie Maker 2.6 (you can find a lot of tutorial on the Internet). I think this version is better for you because it is easier to synchronize song and pictures.
Have a look and enjoy! So long!

Take note:
- Primary School. Give them a line of the lyric. They will have to draw a picture related to its meaning. Take out your camera and take a photo of each. It is possible that your students want to do it for themselves too... then all of you will make the doodle video. In this way, you will explain them how to use Windows Movie Maker to do this possible. Remember: firstly, upload the pictures, secondly, upload the song and finally, synchronize both.
- Secondary School. Divide the class into four/five groups. Each group will have to choose a song to turn into a doodle video. They can take pictures or draw interpreting the meaning of each line. To make the videos, you will explain to them how to use Windows Movie Maker if it is necessary. Finally, the doodle videos will be voted by each student.
